How to seek CNA training paid by an employer or grant

  1. 1

    Pick wages or tuition support

Riverside's college describes a hired Hospitality Assistant route with paid schooling. TCC's JSTP instead bases tuition coverage on your qualifications.

  2. 2

    Verify the approved program

Match the provider and location against the Virginia Board of Nursing list. Confirm which approved program will teach you when an employer arranges outside classes.

  3. 3

    Check funding before committing

Ask Virginia Career Works Hampton Roads to review eligibility for occupational training support. Get a funding decision and a list of remaining expenses before paying a school.

  4. 4

    Read the employment terms

Apply on Riverside Health's site for its Hospitality Assistant route. Review the written work agreement, required shifts and any repayment terms before accepting.

  5. 5

    Complete training and certification

After approved preparation, follow the Board's first-time certification instructions for the Virginia Nurse Aide Competency Test through Credentia. Employer sponsorship does not replace the certification exam.

Nursing assistant wages around Virginia Beach

In May 2025, BLS OEWS estimated 8,110 nursing assistant jobs (31-1131) in the Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk, VA-NC metro. The reported median was $18.75 per hour and $38,990 per year. These regional figures are not training wages or a starting-pay offer.

When reviewing a sponsored position, compare the actual wage, paid school hours, shift requirements and service agreement together. Virginia Beach Trade Schools is an independent guide, not an employer or recruiter, and does not accept applications.

What free CNA training covers, and what to check

Riverside College publishes no tuition cost for its hired Earn-and-Learn participants, subject to the employer's work agreement. Ask for a written breakdown of exam, uniform and screening charges, plus any repayment obligation.

Virginia Peninsula's schedule lists $3,495 full CNA tuition, $1,165 for Virginia residents and $0 for income-eligible students. Its funding page says FastForward reduces tuition and funds are limited; confirm your actual award. TCC's JSTP offers qualifying students third-party tuition coverage. Virginia Career Works Hampton Roads also reviews eligible clients for WIOA-funded training with approved providers. Funding approval and a class seat are separate checks.

Questions before accepting sponsored CNA training

  • Which Board-approved program and location will teach me?
  • Am I paid for classroom, lab and clinical hours?
  • What are the class size, daily hours and clinical travel requirements?
  • Which exam, book, uniform and screening costs remain mine?
  • How long must I work, and at which facility?
  • What must I repay if I leave, fail the exam or lose the job?
  • Does the grant or sponsor provide job-search help after training?

How to check a school

Common questions

Are free CNA classes available to everyone?

No single offer covers every applicant. TCC ties tuition coverage to qualifications. Under 42 CFR 483.152(c), an aide employed by, or offered employment by, a covered nursing facility when training starts cannot be charged for the program, including required books and materials. That rule does not make every private CNA class free to the public.

Can I get paid to become a CNA?

Riverside Health describes paid work and school time through its Hospitality Assistant route. Its agreement requires 12 months of full-time or 18 months of part-time CNA work at the entering facility or division. Ask about current openings, the class start and early-exit terms. Selection depends on the employer's hiring process.

Can I recover training costs if a nursing facility hires me later?

42 CFR 483.152(c)(2) requires the State to provide for reimbursement on a pro rata basis during employment if an aide is hired by, or receives an offer from, a covered facility within 12 months after completing the program. Keep receipts and completion records. Ask the facility how to request reimbursement; this is not an automatic full refund on your hiring date.

Does Saber offer employer-sponsored nurse aide classes in Norfolk?

Saber's careers page advertises sponsored Nurse Aide Training Classes at selected affiliated communities. The live Board list shows its Norfolk program as Current Active, but the careers page does not confirm a current Norfolk sponsored cohort or publish its cost and work terms. Confirm those details with the local program before treating it as a funded opening. Apply on Saber's site if a suitable position is listed.

Does employer-paid training remove Virginia's CNA exam requirement?

Paying for the course and qualifying for certification are separate matters. Riverside College describes certification testing after its employer-supported course. The Virginia Board of Nursing directs first-time examination applicants to Credentia for the Virginia Nurse Aide Competency Test. Ask your sponsor who schedules the test and who covers a retest if needed.

Compare funding before choosing your CNA class
