Virginia's nurse aide education rule requires at least 140 clock hours, including at least 20 lab hours and 40 hours of direct client care. Observation time does not count toward those 40 clinical hours.
To be placed on the registry and certified by examination, you must meet the training requirement, pass the state exam and submit the required application and testing fee. Read the Board's certification-by-examination rule for the full requirements.
Nursing assistant jobs and pay in Hampton Roads
The BLS May 2025 metro estimates report 8,110 nursing assistants (SOC 31-1131) in the Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk, VA-NC area. Median pay was $18.75 per hour and $38,990 per year. These figures cover the full metro area, including communities outside Virginia Beach.
BLS explains that the median splits workers into two equal groups by pay. Its employment estimate counts jobs held, rather than openings. Use the figures as a regional reference when comparing training costs. Ask a prospective employer about starting pay, weekly hours, benefits and any extra pay for nights or weekends.
For free CNA training, TCC's Job Skills Training Program says qualifying students pay nothing because third parties cover tuition. Riverside's Earn-and-Learn route hires selected Hospitality Assistants and pays them during training without tuition charges; it includes a work commitment. At Virginia Peninsula, the Fall 2026 CNA schedule lists $3,495 tuition, a $1,165 Virginia resident price and $0 for income-eligible students, subject to limited funding.
You can also ask Virginia Career Works Hampton Roads about WIOA funding for approved occupational training. Eligibility and approval come before an award.
The Board directs applicants to Credentia for the Virginia Nurse Aide Competency Test. Its regulations name the state-approved exam as NNAAP and refer to written and skills portions. Passing school classes alone does not place you on the registry. You must also meet the application, fee and examination requirements. See Board application guidance, the NNAAP reference and certification rule.
Is free CNA training available locally?
Yes, for students who meet specific program conditions. TCC's Job Skills Training Program lists no-cost CNA training with tuition paid by third parties based on qualifications. Riverside offers selected Hospitality Assistants paid, tuition-free Nurse Aide training through Earn-and-Learn. That route includes an employment commitment. Ask about selection, available seats and work terms before relying on either option.
Can I take CNA classes in the evening?
Pruden's adult Nurse Aide course in Suffolk lists Monday and Tuesday classes from 6 to 9 p.m., totaling 155 hours. The Virginia Beach Adult Learning Center catalog also lists an evening option taught at TMT. Its clinical availability runs from 2:30 to 11 p.m. Confirm the full clinical schedule before arranging work shifts or child care.
Is there a time limit for taking the CNA exam?
Yes. Under Virginia's certification-by-examination rule, an applicant who does not take the approved skills and written portions within two years after training must complete another approved nurse aide program before reapplying. The same retraining requirement applies after three failed examination attempts. Keep your completion documents and ask the school to explain the testing process before graduation.
